Harris Teeter is apparently out as a hot dog in the Ukrop's buyout bonanza. Word on the street is that they just couldn't cut the mustard money wise.
Media wags have it that a private equity firm is primed to take over this Richmond Virginia retail legend, with an impact on the Richmond area and Ukrop's employees that might be a matter of some concern. The theory is that food chain like Harris Teeter would be more likely to have continued to operate Ukrop's as a first class grocery chain. Now, all bets are off.
One loser could be the local SPCA. They depends on the Ukrop's Pet Food drives for much of their feed. It's seems unlikely that a profit driven private equity firm would continue such an enterprise, or any other Ukrop's community projects, for that matter.
The atmosphere in my local Ukrop's, when I bought a salad for dinner tonight, seemed subdued. That may have just been an illusion caused by the dimmer lighting scheme in this store.
If we can't shop at Ukrop's anymore, at least we'll be able to buy snow cones again at Byrd Park Lake. Looks like that high dollar concession stand is just about done.
This isn't the only city park upgrade going down right now. That renonnvation of the lake South Richmond's Forest Hill Park is reported to be progressing nicely too.

It may be a good thing that Harris Teeter isn't going to buy them out. I have worked there for 13 years, and its the worst its ever been. No hiring of new employee's, so if one quits, no one to replace them. Every week we are given more paper work to do, and more hairbrained ideas from corporate that do nothing but increase work load. All of this at a time when we are making more money than ever! Our sales are stronger, even with the economy. I don't mind working at all, but when you have people who have been there for 20-30 years quiting to go work at McDonalds, { It's true, dont laugh} something is wrong.
Almost forgot. They cut the Air Conditioning off this summer in an effort to cut cost. Imagine how hot it gets when you are unloading a truck or standing next to an oven.
