Doug Wilder announces he will not seek re-election as the mayor of Richmond Virginia

James River News

Rachel DePompa, Kerri O'Brian, and Kim Schumacher hop to it as Richmond Mayor L. Dougls Wilder sez he will not run again.

(JRN) Yesterday Richmond's mayor (and former Virginia Governor) , L. Douglas Wilder announced he would not be seeking re-election.

His surprise announcement came one day after city police chief Rodney Monroe accepted the job as the police chief of Charlotte North Carolina.

Monroe is generally credited with reducing the crime rate in Richmond, famous in years past as being one of the highest in the country, and his departure is causing shock waves to ripple through this community founded on the banks of the James River in 1737, or thereabouts.

The unasked question now is can Richmond keep up the
crime fightin' success rate once the fella credited with
it's success is gone.

Canon G9 Mini-Review from James River News

I have been  been playing with my new Canon G9 for a couple of
weeks now here at JRN, and offer this mini-review.

(Please note that image quality is not addressed in this
commentary. In my opinion, IQ is just too subjective,
depending on the personal tastes
of the individual and the target audience for the images
themselves.
And of course, The following statements
are the opinions of the JRN only)

Used "on assignment" side by side with my dSlr (at a local Olympic Torch protest)
it didn't compare.  As we say in Kansas, " No how, No way".

The dSlr simply gives
the photographer more control with less effort, and is, when
available, the superior tool in all aspects, effortlessly producing pictures
that can be something of a struggle with the compact unit.

That said, however, I have discovered that this is a GREAT little
camera for "street" photography (so called).

The reason , unlike most point and shoot
inspired cameras, this one can be "locked in" to the hyper focal settings,
so that it's always ready to go on power-up.

In the opinion of me, that feature, along with the substantial "build" quality,
makes this camera a real "keeper" and well worth the rather high
tariff for a compact "small sensor" camera.

Conclusion? While I will always go with the "big guns"
when I KNOW I'm going to be "on assignment", I am now finding
myself more often than not  leaving the serious hardware in the trunk of the cah,
And being perfectly comfortable in doing so.
